Life on the streets can be incredibly tough for stray dogs, with every day bringing a new battle just to survive. These dogs face constant challenges, from the lack of basic necessities like food and water to the ever-present dangers of traffic, harsh weather, and sometimes even human cruelty.

One such story is that of a little stray dog who found himself in a dire situation on the streets of California. After being hit by a car, he was left with severe injuries, including a broken pelvis and tail, and a painful wound on his thigh. Despite his agony, his fear of humans was so great that he hesitated to accept help when it finally arrived.

A Rescue Attempt Begins

Hope For Paws, a renowned animal rescue organization based in Los Angeles, got a distress call about the injured dog. Eldad Hagar, the founder, promptly headed out to the location to assist the suffering animal. Upon arrival, he found the dog visibly hurt and struggling in the scorching heat. Eldad learned that the dog had been wandering the neighborhood for several days, visibly scared and distrustful of anyone who approached him.

As Eldad exited his vehicle to help, the frightened dog ran away, initiating a chase that lasted about 20 minutes. Eventually, the dog, driven by hunger, cautiously approached Eldad for a piece of food. Although he started to trust Eldad enough to eat from his hand, the sight of a leash scared him, and he ran off again.

Eldad described in a Facebook post how, despite the dog’s severe injuries, he continued to evade capture. “Even though he had a hairline fracture to his pelvis, a broken tail, and a painful injury to his thigh, he kept walking away from me. At one point he actually considered surrendering to me, but the Gentle Snare scared him, and I had to start all over again with gaining his trust,” Eldad wrote.

Patience Pays Off

The rescue required immense patience. Eldad followed the dog for another hour, hoping he would accidentally wander into an enclosed space which would make it easier to secure him safely. Eldad noted, “Patience is the key in rescues like this – especially with dogs who understand they must avoid enclosed yards to avoid being captured.”

A New Beginning for Jack

After much persistence involving gentle gestures and food, the dog finally allowed Eldad to pick him up and bring him to safety. Upon lifting him, Eldad was struck by just how thin the dog was. He decided to name him Jack Skellington, apt for a Halloween-time rescue. Though initially very scared, Jack turned out to be incredibly sweet.

Eldad recalled the moment he had to transport Jack, choosing to let him sit in the passenger seat because he feared Jack might try to escape if placed in a crate. “I was alone and feared that in an attempt to put him in a crate, he would try to escape. I decided to make an exception and let him sit in the passenger seat,” Eldad explained in a video.

Medical Care and Recovery

Jack received a thorough bath before his veterinary appointment on the same day. The vet confirmed the extent of his injuries, requiring the amputation of his tail, but fortunately, his pelvis was expected to heal without the need for surgery.

Despite his frail condition and the trauma he had endured, Jack was incredibly joyful and seemed genuinely grateful to be in safe hands. His recovery was slow, given his malnourished state, but with a proper diet, there was hope that he would soon regain his strength.

Looking for a Forever Home

The SAFE Rescue Team from Huntington Beach quickly stepped in to foster Jack, providing him with the care and love he needed as he healed. They are also actively seeking a forever home for him, hopeful that he will soon find a family that will love and cherish him.
