The Journey to Finding a New Friend
Derrick Schmidt and his fiancé were excited to start their life together, which included fulfilling their dream of adopting a dog. While browsing through an animal shelter’s website, Derrick’s fiancé spotted a photo of Dexter, a charming pup. Without hesitation, they decided to meet him.
Recalling their first encounter, Derrick shared, “We go to the shelter and he just sits down, leaning against me in the cage, looking up at me with those big, soulful eyes. I looked at my fiancée and knew immediately—he was meant to be ours.”

The Joy of Unexpected Friendships
Dexter quickly adjusted to his new life filled with love and security. His favorite activity was playing in the backyard, where he soon met an unexpected friend—a stray dog who started to join in on the fun. Although Derrick was initially wary about letting a stray interact with Dexter, he couldn’t help but notice how happy Dexter was playing with his new companion.
“The first time they met, it was like magic. They played as if they had known each other forever, like long-lost brothers,” Derrick explained. “Whenever I was out doing yard work, he’d come over to greet us. It was wonderful to see them so happy together.”

Challenges Along the Way
Their joyful routine was threatened when animal control showed up in the neighborhood. Aware that the stray dog, now affectionately known as Doakes, didn’t have a collar and could be taken away, Derrick decided to act.
“I hid him in our garage temporarily and discovered that his owners lived just two houses down. I went over to let them know about the situation and even put a collar on Doakes to prevent him from being taken. Sadly, the next day he was back out, collarless, and soon after, he vanished,” Derrick recounted, his voice tinged with frustration.

Despite being told it wasn’t his business, Derrick felt a responsibility towards Doakes. He started a mission to find him, calling shelters and visiting numerous sites until he finally found Doakes again, frozen in fear inside a kennel.
A Pawsome Reunion
Determined to do the right thing, Derrick paid the adoption fee and brought Doakes home for good. Concerned about Doakes’ well-being if he returned to his previous situation, Derrick and his family decided to move to the countryside where both dogs could live freely and safely.

“The day we brought Doakes home for good was unforgettable. Despite their differences—with Dexter being the energetic goofball and Doakes the calm sweetheart—they’ve been inseparable. They spend their days playing in our large yard and snuggling on the couch, recharging for their next adventure,” Derrick said, watching the two dogs with a smile.
