The Overlooked Ones

Unfortunately, older dogs and those with special needs often get overlooked. They struggle more than others to find someone who will take them home. Our story focuses on Virgil, an adorable pup born blind in a Louisiana shelter. Despite his disability, Virgil hoped for a family to love him just like any other dog.
Virgil Finds His People
A wonderful foster family from Ohio decided to take Virgil in. They gave him all the love and care he needed, and he flourished under their attention. This prepared him to find his permanent home.
When Emmeline and her husband met Virgil, they immediately fell in love and decided to adopt him. Although new to caring for a blind dog, they educated themselves and reached out to others with similar experiences.
Virgil was three months old when he joined their family. Despite initial worries about how he would adapt, Virgil quickly put all their fears to rest.
A Fearless Addition
On his first day, Virgil seamlessly blended into the family. He bravely explored the yard, met his dog siblings, Biscotti, Carragher, and Stevie, and played with them like he’d been there forever. His new parents were amazed by his courage.
Virgil’s Independent Spirit
From the start, Virgil showed a strong will to do things on his own. He insisted on climbing the stairs by himself and quickly got the hang of navigating around the house. His ability to move around so effortlessly left many doubting he was blind.
“People often don’t believe he’s blind. They think maybe he can see shadows or something, but he really can’t see anything. He was born without his retinas attached, so he’s always lived in darkness,” Emmeline explained.
More Than Just Smart
Virgil is not only smart but also extremely loving towards his family, showering them with hugs and kisses, showing his appreciation and love.
He’s an adventurous leader during family hikes, always wanting to be at the front, despite his blindness.
Thriving Against the Odds
Virgil’s life is full of exploration and confidence, thanks to the trust and communication he shares with his family. He navigates well both on and off the leash, embracing freedom with confidence built on trust.
His family is profoundly thankful for Virgil’s presence in their lives, inspiring them to foster other special-needs dogs as a way of giving back.
A Lesson in Understanding
Virgil has helped his family gain a deeper understanding of disabilities. Emmeline noted, “Living with a disability is just a normal part of life for many, and it doesn’t make them lesser. Dogs, like people with disabilities, can achieve anything.”
A Happy Ending
We’re delighted that Virgil found his forever home where he is loved and cherished. His story is a testament to the joy and fulfillment special-needs dogs can bring to families. We hope Virgil’s story encourages more people to open their hearts to dogs in need.
