In the sweltering heat of San Bernardino, California, a dog named Neville found himself wandering the streets, lost and alone. His journey on the streets lasted for weeks, where he faced temperatures soaring up to 90 degrees. The details of how Neville ended up in such a dire situation remain unknown, but his need for help was evident and urgent.
A compassionate person noticed Neville loitering outside a local business, enduring the relentless heat. Moved by his plight, they provided him with food and water and reached out to the City of San Bernardino Animal Services for further assistance.
The Shocking Discovery at the Shelter
Upon his arrival at the shelter, Neville’s condition stunned the staff. Not only was he incredibly friendly and affectionate, but he was also morbidly obese, weighing a staggering 132 pounds. This was nearly double the healthy weight for a dog of his size and breed—a 2-year-old brown German Shepherd mix.
The shelter staff promptly sought veterinary care for Neville. The vet diagnosed him with a thyroid condition that contributed to his excessive weight. Despite his health issues, Neville’s sweet nature made him a favorite among the shelter staff, who affectionately described him as a “total love bug” in a heartfelt Facebook post aimed at finding him a rescue or a new home.
Neville’s Transformation Begins
The shelter’s post caught the eye of Niki Thai Van Dat, the proprietor of Niki’s Play N’ Stay, who was touched by Neville’s story. Determined to help, Niki drove almost seven hours from Modesto, California, to adopt Neville, who was soon affectionately renamed Buddha.
Upon arriving in Modesto, Buddha’s new life began with an immediate visit to the vet. While his thyroid levels were low, they weren’t sufficient to diagnose him with hypothyroidism. Nevertheless, Niki was committed to improving Buddha’s health. She implemented a strict diet and devised a gentle exercise regimen that wouldn’t strain his joints.
The Road to Recovery
Buddha’s journey to recovery was challenging yet inspiring. With Niki’s dedicated care, he slowly began to shed the extra pounds. Over time, his weight decreased significantly—from 130 pounds at the shelter to a much healthier 112 pounds. Niki recalls the moment she realized the extent of Buddha’s transformation, “I cried in the parking lot,” overwhelmed by his progress.
Buddha’s transformation was nothing short of remarkable. He ultimately reached a healthy weight of 69 pounds, nearly half of his weight upon rescue. His new physique was not just a testament to his physical change but also symbolized a fresh start.
Buddha’s New Life
Today, Buddha is a different dog. He enjoys leisurely walks, where he proudly carries his own leash, and despite his past hardships, he shows no desire to wander far from home. He loves sunbathing in the backyard and, while he tires easily, he relishes short playful moments.
Buddha’s daily routine now includes frequent cuddles instead of treats. His health has improved drastically, and he is now spayed, up to date on vaccinations, potty-trained, and behaves wonderfully around other dogs, cats, and children. Despite his low energy levels, Buddha’s favorite pastime remains sleeping, embodying the life of a contented “lazy couch potato.”
Looking for a Forever Home
Niki’s dedication has prepared Buddha to find a forever home where he can continue his journey of health and happiness. She hopes to find a family that appreciates his calm and loving nature—a family that will love and care for him for the rest of his life.
Buddha’s story is a powerful reminder of the resilience of animals and the transformative impact of compassionate care. It highlights the importance of giving rescue animals a second chance and the joy they can bring to our lives. For Buddha, each day is a step closer to finding a loving home where he can thrive and share his newfound joy and health.
