The father, Neil Kelley, along with his wife and their 10-year-old son, Logan, were intrigued by a peculiar white blob that stood out against the natural backdrop. Encounter with an Albino Porcupine
Initially, the family had no idea what the white creature could be. It was Logan who first spotted the anomaly, prompting the family to pull over and explore. Upon closer examination, they discovered that the mysterious figure was a porcupine—an exceptionally rare albino porcupine, to be precise.
Albinism in porcupines is an extraordinary genetic condition where the animal lacks the usual pigmentation in its skin, fur, and eyes, giving it a ghostly white appearance. According to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, the odds of a porcupine being born with this condition are about 1 in 10,000. This rarity, combined with the fact that porcupines are nocturnal creatures typically active at night, made this daytime sighting even more special.
The Porcupine’s Calm Demeanor and Surprising Agility
Despite their sudden appearance, the porcupine remained calm and undisturbed by the family’s presence. The Kelley family observed as it skillfully navigated the tree, climbing up to about 25 feet above the ground. This behavior aligns with the Smithsonian’s National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute’s findings that, while North American Porcupines predominantly spend time on the ground, they are also adept climbers.
