Earlier this year, officers from the Dallas Police Department stumbled upon an adorable caramel-colored animal next to a dumpster during their usual patrol in southern Dallas, Texas.
This little creature resembled a puppy or maybe even a baby fox or coyote, but the officers couldn’t be certain about its identity. Despite the uncertainty, they knew it needed help, so they kept it warm and safe until Dallas Animal Services arrived to take it in.
The Debate Begins
The discovery of this mysterious animal sparked curiosity and debate nationwide. Was it a puppy or a coyote? What would become of it? Although officials from Dallas Animal Services leaned towards it being a domestic animal rather than a coyote, they couldn’t say for certain. Even Officer Jacqui Sutherland, who fostered the animal temporarily, had her doubts.
The Waiting Game
As they awaited the results of a DNA test, they decided to give the creature a name – Toast, the adorable mystery of Texas.
The Big Reveal
After nearly two weeks of anticipation, Embark Vet finally provided the answer: Toast was a dog! Her DNA results revealed she was 42% German Shepherd, 38% Siberian Husky, and 20% Australian Cattle Dog.
Finding a Forever Home
With Toast’s true identity confirmed, the next step was finding her a permanent home. Within minutes of her story spreading, she received numerous adoption applications and was quickly placed with a loving family.
A Happy Ending
Toast’s journey ended happily, but there are still many other abandoned dogs and strays in need of homes. Organizations like Dallas Animal Services continue to work tirelessly to find them loving families. If you’re considering adding a pet to your family, consider adopting from a shelter.
