Pet owners go to great lengths to ensure their furry friends lead a joyful and loved life. However, not all dogs are fortunate enough to experience this warmth and affection.

The Tale of Luca, the Pomeranian
Among these strays was Luca, a gorgeous Pomeranian with a dream of finding a loving home. Life on the streets was perilous for him, made even more challenging by his nearly complete blindness. To Luca, the world was a fuzzy, indistinct place.
His fortunes changed when the Animal Care Centers of NYC, the city’s largest animal shelter, rescued him. This provided Luca with a safe haven, but adjusting to his new environment was no easy task. The noise and unfamiliar surroundings heightened his anxiety, and he often lay in his kennel, overwhelmed by the cacophony of other dogs, wondering if he would ever find the love he so desperately sought.
A Chance Encounter with Katie Schneller
Fate smiled on Luca when Katie Schneller walked into the shelter. It was love at first sight. Katie was immediately drawn to the small, anxious dog looking back at her. She began visiting him daily, comforting him with gentle strokes and warm cuddles. Despite his inability to see her face, Luca felt the love radiating from Katie. They quickly developed a deep, unbreakable bond, and Katie knew she had to take him home.
Luca Finds His Forever Home
Before leaving the shelter, Luca bid farewell to the staff who had cared for him. He was ecstatic to start a new chapter in a loving home. Although he couldn’t see his new parents, he felt their love through their soft touches and kind voices. At home, Luca’s happiness was evident, and he seemed to smile all the time.
As time passed, however, Luca’s vision worsened, leading to accidents and even a trip to the emergency clinic. It was then that Katie realized Luca needed cataract surgery.
A Successful Sight-Saving Surgery
The surgery was a success, and within a week, the veterinarians delivered the fantastic news that Luca would soon see clearly again. Although he was still recovering, his joy was palpable. Katie drove him home, where he spent days resting and recuperating.
Discovering the World’s Anew
Once he was well enough, Luca ventured outside for walks with Katie. Now able to see, he was mesmerized by the world around him. Instead of his usual energetic sprints, Luca took cautious steps, stopping to gaze in awe at the trees and the river.
“He would sit in the middle of the road and look up at the trees, then walk over to the edge of the road and stare at the river with his mouth open,” Katie shared with The Dodo. His eyes sparkled with wonder, and he wore a constant smile, cherishing every moment with his beloved mom.

Luca now shares snippets of his life on his Instagram account, @lucaisthegoodest. When he’s not exploring nature or cuddling with his family, he enjoys sitting on the couch, looking out the window, still fascinated by the world around him.
His life is filled with love and adventure, and he adores his parents as much as they adore him.
“He feels like my soulmate. He is the cuddliest, smartest, happiest pup I’ve ever met. He loves everyone and has brought so many wonderful people into my life. I love him in ways that are hard to express … every day, it’s more than the last,” Katie expressed.
