Life on the streets is challenging for anyone, and for a small, senior dog, it can be particularly harsh. Such was the case for a tiny, elderly dog whose life had become a day-to-day struggle for survival amidst numerous health complications. But, as is often the case, a twist of fate awaited him.
Mr. Little’s Tough Life on the Streets
One day, a rescue team from True & Faithful Pet Rescue encountered a tiny Pomeranian mix wandering alone. They named him Mr. Little, aptly reflecting both his size and the pity they felt for this frail creature. Despite his diminutive stature, Mr. Little was not young; the rescuers estimated his age to be around 12 years.
Years of living rough had taken their toll on Mr. Little. He suffered from an inability to use his back legs, an enlarged heart, and a heart murmur, and he was also half blind. His condition required a comprehensive medical examination including an echocardiogram to ensure he was fit for the multiple surgeries he needed. These included procedures to repair a perineal hernia, dental work, neutering, among others.
Despite these overwhelming challenges, the spirit of Mr. Little was unbroken. With the support of the rescue team and numerous veterinary interventions, he was fitted with wheels that enabled him to walk using his hind legs. He also required long-term medication for his heart and other conditions.
Mr. Little Finds a New Family
The future began to look brighter for Mr. Little, soon after his rescue. True & Faithful Pet Rescue shared some exciting news on their Instagram profile on July 6, 2023. They were on their way to Virginia, where a new family awaited Mr. Little at Lake Caroline. His new home was with the @peewee_brigade, where he would meet his new canine siblings, Joey and Kiku—both also senior dogs who had recently experienced the loss of another dog, Cindy. The arrival of Mr. Little, who would be renamed Rocket, promised to bring joy and healing to the household.
Rocket quickly adapted to his new environment and bonded deeply with Joey. Both dogs, being nearly blind, found comfort and companionship in each other’s presence. This close bond was a touching aspect of Rocket’s integration into his new home.
Becoming the Neighborhood Favorite
Rocket’s charm and resilience did not go unnoticed. His loving nature quickly made him a beloved figure not just in his new home but across the neighborhood. His fame extended to social media, where he became a favorite on Instagram, capturing hearts far beyond his immediate surroundings. Rocket’s new family went to great lengths to ensure his comfort and happiness. They explored all possible therapies to improve his mobility and tailored a special diet to meet his specific health needs. His family cherished every moment with him, recognizing that each day was a precious gift.
Unfortunately, the reality of Rocket’s advanced age and the toll it took on his health meant that his time with his new family would be limited. On December 21, 2022, Rocket’s family shared the heartbreaking news of his passing on Instagram. Despite the sadness, they celebrated the full and loving life Rocket had lived since his rescue—far removed from the cold, hard streets where he had once been found.
