The next morning, Lakita’s life changed forever when she was discovered by a local resident who immediately contacted Tracy Korfhage of MisPits And Friends Rescue in Louisville. Despite the risks involved in rescuing street dogs, Tracy felt compelled to help. She was told that Lakita was just moments away from death, prompting her to act quickly.
Rescue and Heartbreak
When Tracy found Lakita, she was lying on a trash pile, in a pitiful state. The dog was extremely weak, smelled terrible, and seemed to have given up on life. But Tracy saw the life still left in her eyes and refused to let her story end there. She took Lakita to animal control, hoping her owner might come forward, but no one did.
A New Beginning
Determined to see Lakita heal, Tracy decided to foster her. What followed was nothing short of miraculous. Within just two weeks, Lakita had gained 14 pounds and was showing signs of recovery. She began to play and enjoy life in Tracy’s backyard, slowly coming out of her shell.
Rediscovering Joy
Lakita’s transformation was remarkable. She relished simple pleasures like sunbathing, chewing on bones, and taking naps. Tracy and Lakita spent months training together, and soon Lakita was walking on a leash and learning basic commands. Although she was cautious around other dogs, she showed no aggression.

As the holiday season approached, Tracy shared pictures of Lakita dressed up for Christmas. The post quickly went viral, capturing the hearts of many, including Sebastian and Ashtyn Garrison. They felt an immediate connection with Lakita and knew she was meant to be part of their family.

The Garrisons arranged to meet Lakita and it was clear she belonged with them. She quickly warmed up to her new family, particularly enjoying the company of the kids. In her new home, surrounded by love, Lakita blossomed into the happiest, most affectionate dog, finally putting her troubled past behind her.
