In many parts of the world, dogs suffer terribly. But thankfully, there are heroes among us who dedicate their lives to rescuing these innocent animals.

One such heart-wrenching yet hopeful story began when Sabine, a devoted rescuer from Little Steps Matter, and her colleague discovered a severely malnourished dog. The poor creature was tied to a pole, desperately rummaging through a trash bag for food.

As they approached, the dog, surprisingly trusting and not at all afraid, looked up. The rescuers, moved by the pitiful sight, quickly freed her from the rope that bound her. It was a moment filled with tears but also relief, as they knew this was the first step toward a better life for this sweet dog.

Finally Safe

After freeing the dog, Sabine and her colleague gently picked her up and took her to a place where she would be cared for—ensuring she would never endure such neglect again. This marked the beginning of a new chapter for the little survivor.

The rescuers named the dog Lisa. Despite her newfound safety, the signs of long-term neglect were evident. Lisa was in terrible shape, a condition that certainly didn’t happen overnight.

Sabine was particularly struck by the cruelty Lisa had endured. “It was so heartless. They tied her up so she couldn’t follow them when they abandoned her,” she shared with The Dodo.

They rushed Lisa to a veterinary clinic, where she received a thorough examination. The vets found that she was not only severely dehydrated but also suffering from mange and early stages of cancer. Immediate treatment was crucial, so Lisa was put on an IV and stayed at the clinic for continuous care.

Recovery Time

Within just two days at the clinic, there was a noticeable improvement in Lisa’s condition. “She had a bit more energy and was wagging her tail, happy to see us,” Sabine recalled. After five days, Lisa was well enough to leave the clinic and move to a safehouse—a temporary home where she would continue her recovery.

Arriving at the safehouse, Lisa was initially overwhelmed. Accustomed to neglect, she was unsure how to respond to the affection and care she was now receiving. However, it didn’t take long for her to realize that she was finally in a loving environment. With each day, her spirits lifted, and her health improved visibly.

The once timid and frail dog began to thrive. After ten days in the shelter, Lisa had gained weight, and her fur began to regrow. By the fourth week, she was declared cancer-free and had become lively enough to play and socialize with other dogs.

New Life

Lisa was blossoming into a joyful, energetic dog who relished her interactions with humans and other dogs alike. “At first, she was a bit overwhelmed, but our pack is always gentle with newcomers. She settled in beautifully,” Sabine explained.

Looking and feeling like a completely different dog, Lisa’s transformation was nothing short of miraculous. Now energetic and playful, she enjoyed her days, especially running on the beach, a stark contrast to the life she once knew.

Looking for a Forever Home

Today, Lisa is a happy, healthy one-year-old mixed breed dog. Though she may be a bit shy at first, she quickly warms up once she feels safe. Sabine proudly states, “Lisa is a miracle dog, and she deserves the very best.”

Lisa is currently looking for a forever home where she can continue to receive the love and care she so rightly deserves. If you or someone you know is interested in adopting this incredible survivor, please contact Little Steps Matter for more information.
