A Ray of Hope in the Nick of Time
Just when things seemed hopeless for Charlie, his luck turned. A compassionate woman saw him wandering and took immediate action to help him by taking him to a local shelter. This could have been just another short chapter in his tough life, but then, something incredible happened that changed his fate.
As fate would have it, Shira Scott Astrof, the founder of The Animal Rescue Mission, was on her way to that very shelter to pick up another dog. The woman who rescued Charlie from the streets had managed to get him to the shelter just in time. There, one of the shelter workers pleaded with Shira to take Charlie under her wing, fearing he wouldn’t survive if he stayed in the shelter.

Shira recalls the moment vividly. “I arrived at the Downey shelter to pick up a senior dog when I noticed a skinny, terrified puppy covered in wounds being brought in. A shelter worker approached me and begged, ‘Please don’t let this dog go into the shelter system; he won’t make it out,'” she shared in a post.
Healing Begins with Compassion
With her friend Katie Cleary of Peace 4 Animals by her side, Shira managed to get Charlie to a veterinary hospital in Malibu for the urgent care he desperately needed. Despite his traumatic experiences and his physical wounds—which suggested he might have been used as a bait dog—Charlie’s spirit was unbroken. Remarkably, he showed no signs of aggression. Instead, he wagged his tail, his eyes seeming to express gratitude towards those who were saving him.

“These dogs are astonishing. Despite the severe abuse Charlie endured, all he wants is to give and receive love,” Shira shared on her social media, moved by his resilience and gentle nature.
From Recovery to a New Life
Charlie’s recovery was nothing short of miraculous. Under constant care at the vet, he quickly began to regain strength. Within weeks, he was not only healthier but had also started to show his loving and playful personality. His turnaround was so rapid that soon, he was ready to find a permanent home.
And as luck would have it, Charlie didn’t have to wait long. Shira’s network came through when one of her friends introduced her to Jay, a man who had been touched by Charlie’s story and was eager to give him a loving home. When Charlie was discharged from the hospital, he and Jay met for the first time. The connection was instant—everyone could see that these two were meant to be together.
A New Chapter on the Beaches of Manhattan
Jay welcomed Charlie into his home in Manhattan Beach, California, where they started their new life together. Charlie adapted quickly to his new environment, as if he had always belonged there. He now spends his days exploring the beautiful beaches, swimming in the ocean, and meeting new friends.

Every day with Charlie is a joy for Jay. “Seeing him run on the beach, happy and free, is the most rewarding experience,” Jay says. “After everything he’s been through, it’s incredible to see him like this.”
