Daniele, a rescuer at Jersey Pits in New Jersey, was going about her day at the animal shelter when she overheard a conversation about a dog stranded on a nearby cliff. Without a second thought, she sprinted out of the shelter and made her way towards the cliff to find the dog.

Upon reaching the site, Daniele spotted the frightened pup and tried to coax him down. However, despite her pleas, the dog wouldn’t budge or even react to her voice, indicating to Daniele that this rescue wouldn’t be straightforward.

Determined to save the dog, Daniele began to climb the steep, treacherous path towards him. As she got closer, she realized the dog was extremely scared. Shaking uncontrollably, the dog would retreat further back whenever Daniele advanced, edging dangerously close to the cliff’s ledge. Daniele recounted to The Dodo how the dog was “disconnected” and visibly stressed, making the rescue challenging.

Eventually, Daniele managed to corner the dog safely away from the cliff edge. She quickly called for backup, realizing she needed more help to secure the dog safely. Soon after, help arrived, and they were able to use a pole to secure the dog and bring him safely down to the animal control facility.

New Beginnings at the Shelter

Once at the New Jersey shelter, the Pit Bull, clearly shaken by the ordeal, was very anxious and remained huddled in his kennel, shaking. The shelter staff tried to find a microchip but to no avail. As per New Jersey law, the dog was put on a seven-day stray hold. Throughout this period, Daniele visited him daily, slowly winning his trust with each visit, which was crucial for his recovery.

Over time, the dog, now named Benny, began to open up. He started showing affection, particularly to Daniele, greeting her with hugs during her visits.

A New Home

After the mandatory hold period, Benny needed a foster home. Fortunately, a couple stepped forward willing to take him in. In his new home, Benny’s energetic and playful nature was evident, but it was also clear he had severe separation anxiety. Jessica, his foster mom, noticed his challenges with adjusting to a domestic life, recounting instances where Benny’s anxiety led to some destructive behaviors. They realized they had to set some boundaries and teach him how to be a part of their family.

Benny’s relationship with Sky, the couple’s other dog, started off rocky. Sky was bewildered by Benny’s lack of house manners, often looking at him and then at her owners as if questioning his presence. However, they eventually warmed up to each other, finding comfort in each other’s company.

Heartache and Healing

During this period of adjustment, the family faced a heartbreaking setback. Sky was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer. This news devastated the family, but Benny’s presence brought them some comfort. Veron, Benny’s foster dad, noted how Benny’s vibrant energy provided the family with much-needed lightness during this tough time. Even as Sky’s health declined, Benny seemed to sense the gravity of the situation and adjusted his behavior to support the family.

Sadly, Sky passed away. Benny’s role in helping the family cope with their grief became even more significant. He was a constant source of support, reminding them to cherish the memories of Sky and to keep moving forward.

Benny Finds His Forever Home

As the family came to terms with their loss, one thing became clear: Benny was here to stay. His journey from a scared, stranded dog on a cliff to a beloved family member was nothing short of remarkable. Jessica felt that Benny’s arrival was serendipitous, describing it as a manifestation of Sky’s “cosmic energy.”

Benny had not just found a home; he had become an integral part of a family that cherished him deeply. Through his journey, Benny not only found safety but also provided comfort and joy to a family going through a difficult time. His story is a testament to the powerful bond between humans and their pets, and how the right companions can make the darkest times a little brighter.

Benny, you’ve done more than just survive; you’ve thrived and made a profound impact on the lives of those around you. You’re not just a good boy; you’re a great one.
