Reece, a little puppy with a beautiful black and tan coat, found himself in a challenging situation that many shelter dogs experience. After spending months in a shelter without catching anyone’s eye, Reece became overwhelmed by fear. Simple activities like walking or interacting with people seemed incredibly daunting for him. Unfortunately, Reece is not alone; many dogs develop what’s known as kennel stress after long periods in shelters.
This kind of stress can take a significant emotional toll on any dog, especially a puppy like Reece. He became scared, confused, and desperate for a chance at a better life.
A Lonely Start
Reece’s journey began when he was found wandering the streets by himself and was taken to the Riverside County Animal Control Shelter in Jurupa Valley, California. Weighing just 28 pounds, he arrived at the shelter in late September 2023. Sadly, despite his striking appearance and gentle nature, Reece did not attract any interest from potential adopters.
As the days turned into weeks, the lack of interest and extended stay in the shelter environment began to affect Reece deeply. He started to exhibit clear signs of kennel stress.
The Struggle Inside the Shelter
Kerri S. Mabee, the deputy public information officer at Riverside County Department of Animal Services, shared some insights into Reece’s condition. “When Reece was impounded at our shelter on September 30, he was struggling to understand how to walk on a leash and was very reluctant to interact with humans. As a young pup, we hoped to see an improvement in his behavior. However, his social skills have remained a challenge while in the shelter,” she explained.
After 50 days, Reece became the shelter’s longest resident. Tragically, this meant he was also at risk of being euthanized.
The Urgent Call to Save Reece
Recognizing the dire situation, the Instagram account “Saving Riverside Shelter Dogs,” which focuses on helping dogs at risk of euthanasia in the Riverside Shelter, took immediate action. They posted a heart-wrenching video to highlight Reece’s plight, showcasing how the scared puppy would barely move in the play yard.
The post described Reece’s condition poignantly: “Reece has completely shut down after being passed by for 50 days. He is so scared; he won’t even move in the play yard. HE IS JUST A BABY! Scared, alone, confused… We are begging somebody to save his life & give him the best life moving forward.”
Volunteers shared their observations, emphasizing Reece’s fear. “He was so scared and wouldn’t come near me when I approached his kennel. But whenever I left treats, he would wait until I left to come out and get them, then ran back inside to hide,” one volunteer recounted.

The comments poured in, with one person noting, “No wonder he’s scared!!! It’s scary in there!!! He is a clever boy and knows he’s in danger.
