A shelter dog named Scrabble thought he had finally found his forever home but was returned within just 72 hours. Such a short time is hardly enough for anyone to adjust to a new home, let alone a young puppy who has already been through a lot. This pattern of fleeting hope followed by disappointment is all too common among shelter dogs.
A Nationwide Problem
Shelters across the country are seeing an increase in the number of pets being returned. It’s a heartbreaking reality they face daily, and unfortunately, it’s worsening. Let Scrabble’s story be a reminder of the commitment required when adopting a pet.
Scrabble’s Journey
Initially from Tennessee, Scrabble was facing almost certain death before being rescued. He was in a high-kill shelter with his brother, Checkers, before being transported to Schultz’s Guest House in Massachusetts. Merrill Fortier of Schultz’s Guest House highlighted the grim reality in Tennessee, with many dogs being rescued from life-threatening situations.
Adoption Challenges
Despite efforts to find permanent homes for these pets, returns are still frequent, occurring as soon as 24 hours or as long as several years post-adoption. Often, the reasons for returning pets are considered unjustifiable. In Scrabble’s case, he was deemed “too much” by his new owners.
The Importance of Patience
All rescue dogs, especially those like Scrabble, undergo significant changes in a short period. They require time, love, and patience to settle into their new environments. Unfortunately, Scrabble was not given a fair chance by his adoptive family.
Scrabble’s Potential for Happiness
Despite his turbulent start, Scrabble remains an affectionate and intelligent dog. At just 7 months old, he’s still hopeful for another chance at a happy life. His story resonated on social media, leading to a new adoption.
A New Beginning for Scrabble
Now named Timmy, he has been adopted into a home in North Attleboro with plenty of land to explore and two new kitty siblings. His new life includes daily walks and a loving family, promising him the long, happy life he deserves.
Through Scrabble’s story, we are reminded of the responsibilities and commitments involved in adopting a pet. It’s crucial for potential pet owners to understand and commit to the care and time needed to truly integrate a new pet into their family.
