When Lee Asher, known for his dedication to saving dogs and the founder of The Asher House, visited Wild Rivers Animal Rescue in Oregon, he didn’t expect to meet a dog that would touch his heart so profoundly.

A member of the shelter staff introduced Lee to Sammy, a dog whose tail began to wag and who wore a hopeful smile, sensing that perhaps his fortunes were about to change.

Heartbreak struck Lee when he learned that Sammy had endured abuse. Originally from a high-kill shelter, Sammy arrived in dire conditions and had even undergone surgery. Despite his sweet nature, he was consistently passed over for adoption and was nearing euthanasia.

Fortunately, Wild Rivers Animal Rescue intervened just in time to save him.

Sammy Leaves The Shelter

Lee felt an immediate connection and decided to foster Sammy at his sanctuary. He whispered promises to find Sammy a loving home while giving him a gentle kiss.

As they left the shelter, Lee was determined to spoil Sammy and offer him the best life possible. Initially, Sammy was wary of his new foster dad, but Lee was confident he would earn his trust.

On their way home, Lee comforted Sammy in the car, trying to soothe his fears and uncertainties.

He even surprised Sammy by stopping at a dog bakery where Sammy excitedly picked out toys for the first time.

After shopping, they drove to Estacada, Oregon, where Sammy would meet Lee’s other nine dogs. The pack welcomed Sammy immediately, helping him feel at home.

Showing Him The Beauty Of Life

Eager to show Sammy the joys of life, Lee’s first adventure with him was a trip to the beach. It was Sammy’s first time experiencing the beach, and he loved it. Running along the shore, he realized his newfound freedom, far from the confines of shelter life.

Lee noticed a remarkable change in Sammy after the beach visit. He let his guard down and began trusting Lee more openly, showering him with kisses as if to express his gratitude for the newfound happiness.

Lee continued their adventures by taking Sammy hiking with the entire pack. Sammy was captivated by the natural scents and was visibly joyful, feeling happier than ever.

Sammy Was Home All Along

While Lee initially planned to find Sammy a forever home, it became clear that Sammy had already found it. The bond they had formed was too strong to break, and Lee realized Sammy belonged with him and the pack.

Sammy not only felt love and security but had become an integral part of the family. He was not just any dog in the sanctuary; he was Lee’s son and had a special place in his heart.

Unfortunately, Sammy faced health challenges, including heartworm, which was treated successfully. However, he later started having seizures, which led to frequent vet visits as Lee tried to manage his condition.

In February 2021, surrounded by love in Lee’s arms, Sammy passed away. The loss was profoundly difficult for Lee, but the memories of Sammy’s happiest days remained cherished.

Sammy’s time with Lee and his canine siblings was the highlight of his life. He found joy and love at the sanctuary, which was truly his home from the moment he arrived.

Lee’s experience with Sammy underscores the emotional depth of rescuing and fostering animals. It’s not just about saving lives but also about creating bonds that enrich both the human and animal lives involved. Sammy’s story, though bittersweet, is a testament to the transformative power of love and care in the world of animal rescue.
