Leo, an English Lab, has always marched to the beat of his own drum, and it’s made his life quite interesting. Despite his numerous adventures, one achievement eluded him: becoming a service dog. Leo didn’t make it through the service dog program because, as his mom says, “the standards were too high,” and the trainers didn’t quite appreciate Leo’s knack for using his smarts in rather self-serving ways!
Leo’s New Purpose
After spending two years in the Paws for Purple Hearts program in California, Leo didn’t meet the strict criteria required of a service dog. However, he didn’t let this setback stop him from finding his true calling. Leo now serves as a different kind of service dog to his mom, Samantha Welborn, utilizing his training in unique and sometimes mischievous ways.
Working on His Own Terms
Even though Leo uses his skills primarily for his own benefit, it’s incredibly endearing to watch him in action. He’s particularly enthusiastic about helping his mom prepare for walks. In his eagerness to get going, Leo fetches various items for Sam, including clothing, socks, and shoes. It’s his way of speeding up the process, though not always with the items Sam actually needs!
Sam shares on her TikTok account, “I adopted him when he didn’t pass service dog school; he loves to bring me my things when he wants a walk.” While sometimes Leo brings things he shouldn’t, it’s just part of his charm. Sam understands his high intelligence and potential, even if he uses it to achieve his personal goals.
Helping Mom on a Daily Basis
Leo’s lack of subtlety is well-known among his followers on TikTok. Despite his quirks, Sam adores every little thing about him. She appreciates his smart, emotionally intelligent nature and certainly doesn’t mind his persuasive ways.
“Leo might have flunked out of service dog school, but he’s still the smartest dog I know,” Sam notes in one of her TikTok videos.
Daily Adventures and Emotional Support
Leo and Sam have a wonderful time together daily. They enjoy hiking in the mountains and taking long strolls, exploring the great outdoors. “Leo is the best adventure buddy,” Sam comments on TikTok.
When they’re not out and about, they relish each other’s company at their home in Colorado. Leo has a significant role as an emotional-support dog as well. Whenever Sam feels stressed, Leo is there to cheer her up. He may not have officially graduated from service dog school, but he certainly serves his mom—in every way possible!
