We all tend to think our dogs are the stars of the show, unique in every way. But the story I’m about to tell you about a dog named Mordecai will prove that some dogs really do break the mold.
Meet Mordecai: A Survivor with a Tale
Mordecai, a dog with a face that could launch a thousand “awws,” didn’t have the easiest start in life. But as fortune would have it, he found a family that not only accepted but celebrated every bit of his quirky personality.
Mordecai’s journey began with a rocky start at an Ohio-based rescue, Speak For The Unspoken. A previous adoption didn’t work out, and it left him quite downhearted. However, when he met Lauren and Harrison, it seemed like all the stars aligned. They felt an immediate connection and knew right away that they were about to embark on a joyful, wild ride together.
Adopting Mordecai: Challenges Turn into Blessings
Lauren and Harrison were already experienced in caring for pets with special needs, being parents to two disabled cats. When they met Mordecai, who is deaf, they knew they could provide him with the loving home he needed.
While Mordecai’s past is largely a mystery, certain behaviors hinted at a less-than-pleasant life before he was rescued. Lauren shared, “You can tell by his reactions and fears that he likely came from an abusive situation down south.” Despite this, the couple was ready to turn his life around.
Living with a Deaf Dog: Learning and Adapting
Having a deaf dog might sound challenging, but there are unexpected perks, like not having to worry about him being startled by loud noises like doorbells or fireworks. However, it also comes with its unique set of challenges. Lauren explained, “If he runs off, we can’t just call him back. That’s why we keep a GPS tracker on him. Also, when he’s barking in the yard, we can’t call him inside, so we might seem like uncaring dog parents, but that’s not the case.”
Interestingly, Mordecai has a specific dislike for huskies. According to Lauren, “He barks at them so fiercely; it’s almost like a scream from a horror movie. He’s louder than he realizes, but we manage.”
Despite these quirks, Mordecai is an incredibly smart dog. He has learned sign language, which he uses to communicate with Lauren and Harrison. His intelligence doesn’t stop at learning commands; he’s also quite the charmer. “He greets the mailman every day and flops down for a belly rub,” Lauren added with a laugh.
Final Thoughts: A Dog’s Love Knows No Bounds
Mordecai’s story is a testament to the resilience of dogs and the transformative power of love and acceptance. From a troubled past to a life filled with love, this dog’s journey is a reminder of the special bond humans can share with their furry friends.
So here’s to Mordecai, a dog who not only survived but thrived. Here’s to the couple who saw his potential and the joy he brings into their lives every day. Truly, good boy, Mordecai!
