When Suzette Hall, the founder of Logan’s Legacy in Irvine, California, answered her phone, she was expecting another routine call about a dog in need. But this call was anything but ordinary.
Unbreakable Bond
Suzette learned of two small dogs seen wandering a neighborhood, appearing very distressed and inseparable. It seemed they had been abandoned and were unwilling to leave their spot or each other’s side. “They would literally follow each other up the street and then back to their spot. They never, ever, ever left each other’s side,” Suzette shared with The Dodo.
Local residents tried to coax the dogs, later named Pongo and Lilly, into their homes to provide shelter, but the dogs wouldn’t budge.
Community Effort
In a last-ditch effort to help, neighbors set up a makeshift bed with food and water for Pongo and Lilly and reached out to several rescue organizations, including Logan’s Legacy.
Challenging Rescue
Suzette knew rescuing the pair wouldn’t be easy, as handling two dogs is typically harder than one. Fortunately, she wasn’t alone in this—another rescuer, Chloe, stepped in to help. “Thank goodness Chloe and I connected. There’s nothing better than rescuers working together to save lives,” she said.
The rescue team promptly went to the scene and decided to use a humane trap with treats to catch the dogs. The strategy worked: Pongo and Lilly were intrigued by the treats and approached. “Pongo went in so fast, but the tiny black one [was] so weary. But she stayed right by her friend,” Suzette recalled.
A Close Call
When Lilly ventured into a nearby yard, the team used baby gates to track her movements. As Lilly hid under a car, the rescuers quickly enclosed the area with gates, ensuring she couldn’t escape. Once captured, they reunited her with Pongo.
“It was so cute to see how bonded these two were. They were skinny, scared, and sweet all at the same time,” Suzette added. The duo immediately received foster care, complete with baths and haircuts.
A Bright Future Ahead
Today, Lilly and Pongo are flourishing in their foster homes, receiving all the love and care they need. They are still together, looking for a permanent home—a true package deal. With their irresistible charm, it’s only a matter of time before they find their forever family. Their successful rescue is a testament to the incredible teamwork of local rescuers.
