Drogo, an American Pitbull Terrier, found himself at the Austin Animal Center not by any fault of his own but because his owner was evicted and unable to keep him. The owner had promised to return for him, but as days turned into weeks, and weeks into months, it became clear that Drogo’s owner wasn’t coming back.
As time passed, Drogo watched many other dogs come and go, finding their new families, while he remained behind. It wasn’t long before Drogo became the shelter’s longest-staying resident. Despite being a favorite among the volunteers and staff—who loved his gentle nature and how he fancied himself a lapdog despite his size—everyone’s deepest wish was to see him find a loving home.
Jessica, one of the dedicated volunteers at the shelter, shared her special bond with Drogo: “I know you shouldn’t play favorites… but Drogo is my favorite. He thinks he’s a lapdog, and we haven’t had the heart to tell him otherwise. He’s house-trained, doesn’t bark much, and did well with my 6-year-old son. He’s a friend to every person he meets and quickly became a volunteer favorite. After being here for over a year, he’s so ready to have a home of his own.”

However, Drogo remained at the shelter, celebrating his 4th birthday and marking over 550 days of waiting.
On his birthday, the volunteers threw a party for him, wishing more than anything that this year would be the one in which he found his true, forever family. And perhaps that birthday wish carried some magic because soon after, the shelter announced on their Facebook page that Drogo was adopted.
The post was filled with hope and relief: “It must have been a good luck charm because Drogo was ADOPTED today after 500+ days in the shelter. Drogo, you sweet boy… you didn’t deserve to wait that long, and you certainly didn’t deserve all the heartbreak. But now, you have (hopefully) a forever home and a person who will be able to mend your broken heart. Enjoy the rest of your life!”
