On a chilly winter night, as Lisa Reams of Mississippi was just about to doze off in her cozy bed, her phone suddenly lit up. She couldn’t help but wonder, “Who could it be at this hour?”

It turned out to be a message from a good Samaritan who had noticed an abandoned dog at a notorious local dumpster site. The message described a heart-wrenching scene: a helpless dog, curled up on a dirty old couch beside the dumpsters, visibly shivering—likely from both the cold and fear.

This news struck Lisa hard, flooding her with sadness. Sleep was no longer an option; she couldn’t rest knowing this poor dog was out there, alone and frightened.

A Rush to the Rescue

Driven by a surge of determination, Lisa sprang out of bed, still in her pajamas, and drove straight to the notorious dumping ground. “My heart broke thinking about how cold it was outside. I knew I wouldn’t be able to sleep until she was safe and warm,” Lisa recounted to The Dodo.

Upon arrival, she instantly spotted the dog—a small, innocent-looking girl who had been severely let down by humans. As Lisa approached, the dog, whom Lisa would later name Cammi, locked eyes with her. Realizing that help had arrived, Cammi’s tail began to wag tentatively, a silent plea for some much-needed affection.

First Moments of Comfort

The poor dog was trembling violently. “She was shaking and shivering so badly,” Lisa explained. But as soon as Lisa offered some gentle touches and managed to secure a leash around Cammi, the dog seemed to understand that she was in safe hands. Cammi willingly walked to Lisa’s truck and hopped in. Once inside, she snuggled into a large blanket on the back seat, with the seat warmers adding an extra layer of comfort. Finally feeling secure, Cammi relaxed and slept all the way to Lisa’s home.

A New Beginning

Back at Lisa’s, Cammi slowly began to adjust to her new surroundings. Lisa Reams, a rescuer known in Mississippi for her dedication to saving dogs like Cammi, took her under her wing. “Lisa has been a saving grace for countless dogs just like our sweet girl,” mentioned NYC Second Chance Rescue in a post about the rescue.

Cammi, who is about one-and-a-half years old and a mixed breed, proved to be a gentle and loving pup. She enjoys soaking up the sun, playing with other dogs, and, most importantly, receiving affection from anyone around her. Under Lisa’s care, Cammi was not only finding a temporary shelter but was also given a chance to leave her harsh past behind and embark on a journey toward a happier life.

Ready for a Forever Home

After passing her temperament test with flying colors, it was clear that Cammi would make a wonderful addition to any family. She was spayed, received medical attention, and began treatment for heartworm. “Paws crossed, she’ll find her forever home soon. But if not, she’ll go to a foster home to continue her journey,” Lisa added, hopeful for Cammi’s future.

NYC Second Chance Rescue facilitates her adoption. They encourage anyone living within six hours of New York City, who feels they could provide Cammi with the loving home she deserves, to reach out and consider adoption.

A Nationwide Issue

This story sheds light on the grim reality faced by countless dogs across the country. They are abandoned at shelters or left to fend for themselves on the streets. “The world can be a cruel place, especially for those without a voice,” stated the NYC rescue team, urging people to support their efforts in rescuing and caring for dogs like Cammi.
