In every community, there’s always a figure who captures the hearts of everyone around. In Boston, that figure was Spencer — and his ‘community’ extended to the entire city!
This remarkable Golden Retriever, known as the darling and spirit of the Boston Marathon, was adored by all. Over the years, he became a symbol of love and empathy, and his devotion to the Marathon became legendary!
Spencer: A Symbol of Love and Support
Rich Powers, a professional photographer and Spencer’s devoted owner, initiated the Boston Marathon tradition with Spencer several years ago. However, it wasn’t until 2018 that Spencer’s story went viral.
That year, in the pouring rain, Spencer appeared at the Marathon holding the event flags in his mouth, showing unwavering support for the athletes.
Everything that followed is nothing short of legendary!
Since then, Spencer, along with his Golden Retriever sister, Penny, became integral to the Marathon, offering moral support and becoming the undisputed stars of the event. People were delighted to see a dog holding flags in his mouth, displaying his enthusiasm and support for the runners. This sight became a cherished tradition, with many taking photos with Spencer and sharing them on social media.
An Everyday Hero
“Spencer became an ‘everyday hero’ that people could relate to because everyone has their own Spencer story in their lives,” Rich shared on Instagram. Spencer’s charm and unique hobby made him an instant social media sensation and even got him featured on TV several times.
One particularly memorable moment was when Spencer earned his very own gold medal. A runner, moved by Spencer’s presence, took a photo with him and placed the medal around Spencer’s neck. When the runner started to leave, Rich reminded him about the medal, but the runner insisted, saying, “No, this is for him. Keep doing what you’re doing.” This act of kindness further solidified Spencer’s role as a beloved figure in the community.
Spencer’s Battle with Illness
Despite his fame and the joy he brought to many, Spencer faced significant health challenges. A few years ago, he was diagnosed with a tumor and spent months battling severe medical issues. For a time, it seemed like he might beat the odds.
Unfortunately, in September 2022, Spencer was diagnosed with inoperable cancer, giving him less than five months to live. He passed away in 2023 at the age of 13.
Throughout his illness, Spencer never lost his cheerful disposition. He continued to spread love and joy, even during the toughest times. “His remaining months were happy, and he still grabbed his frisbee on the way out the door until his last days,” Rich said on Instagram.
Boston Honors Spencer
As a final tribute for all the joy and unforgettable moments he provided, Spencer, declared the official dog of the Boston Marathon, was honored with a statue in Ashland, Massachusetts. Created by local sculptor Jeff Buccacio, the statue was placed near Spencer’s favorite spot along the Marathon route.
Seeing Spencer honored by the entire city filled his owners with pride and emotion. The statue unveiling was a bittersweet moment, but the presence of so many people who came to honor Spencer was priceless.
A Legacy of Love and Resilience
Spencer’s statue stands as a testament to friendship, compassion, resilience, and above all, love. “Spencer’s statue will represent all the everyday heroes who overcome their challenges every day. It also represents the thousands of therapy dogs, service dogs, and their handlers who volunteer to help where needed,” Rich added.
Even though Spencer is no longer physically with us, his spirit continues to inspire. He will forever cheer on the athletes from his favorite spot in the hearts of those who loved him. “Spencer will cheer on the runners again on Marathon Monday,” Rich wrote in his Instagram post.
A Lasting Memory
Spencer’s legacy is one of unwavering support, joy, and love. He touched the lives of many and left an indelible mark on the city of Boston. Spencer, you will be remembered always, buddy!
