Jager, a majestic mix of Great Dane and Saint Bernard, began his story when his previous owner had to give him up due to changes in personal circumstances. This big, lovable dog found his way to the Idaho Saint Bernard Rescue, hopeful for a second chance at happiness.
He was quickly adopted by a family who fell in love with him at first sight. Everything seemed perfect as Jager settled into his new life. However, it wasn’t long before he began showing signs of intense separation anxiety. Whenever left alone, he would engage in destructive behaviors that were challenging for his new family to manage.
Despite several attempts at training and adaptation, it became clear that Jager needed more than a typical home environment. He needed the companionship and constant presence of a pack to feel secure and content.

A New Opportunity at The Asher House
As Jager’s needs became more apparent, the rescue team faced a tough decision about his future. That’s when they thought of Lee Asher and his sanctuary, The Asher House, located in Estacada, Oregon. The Asher House is a haven for rescued animals, where Lee lives with a large pack of dogs on expansive property ideal for their wellbeing.
The team reached out to Lee, sharing Jager’s situation and the gentle giant’s need for a pack environment. Lee, known for his enormous heart and dedication to animal rescue, didn’t hesitate. He agreed to take Jager in, believing firmly in giving him a second chance at a happier life.

“We were overjoyed and so grateful when Lee said yes to taking Jager,” a representative from Idaho Saint Bernard Rescue shared. “It was the best outcome we could hope for because Jager would never have to feel alone again.”
Settling Into Pack Life
Upon arriving at The Asher House, Jager was cautiously introduced to his new family—a diverse group of dogs, each with their own rescue stories. Lee and his team took great care in making sure Jager felt welcome and part of the pack from the very beginning.
“It was a big day for him,” Lee commented. “A long drive, meeting new people, new dogs, and getting used to a lot of new smells. But Jager handled it all wonderfully. He’s quite relaxed and seems to be adjusting well to his new life.”

Jager’s transition into pack life was a heartwarming success. The companionship of the other dogs helped mitigate his separation anxiety, and he quickly became a beloved member of The Asher House family.
Understanding and Managing Separation Anxiety in Large Dogs
Lee Asher believes it’s crucial for people to understand the challenges of dealing with separation anxiety, especially in large dogs like Jager. “Separation anxiety in a dog Jager’s size is a whole different ballgame compared to a smaller dog,” Lee explained. “They are strong, and their anxiety can lead to significant damage if not properly managed.”
Handling such anxiety requires more than just good training. It requires patience, understanding, and, most importantly, time spent with the dog. At The Asher House, Jager receives constant interaction and activities that help keep his mind and body engaged, significantly reducing his anxiety.
Life at The Asher House
At The Asher House, every day is an opportunity for Jager to enjoy life without the fear of being alone. The sanctuary offers him and the other dogs plenty of space to roam, play, and relax in a safe and loving environment.
Lee’s approach to rescue is holistic, focusing on both mental and physical health. “With a pack as large as ours, Jager has everything he needs—companionship, space, and lots of love. It’s not just about rescuing an animal; it’s about giving them a quality of life that they deserve,” Lee stated.
The impact of The Asher House extends beyond just providing a home for these animals. It’s about creating a community where rescued dogs can thrive and overcome their past traumas, offering a powerful example of compassion and dedication in animal rescue.
As Jager continues his life at The Asher House, his story is a testament to the power of second chances and the importance of finding the right environment for each animal’s unique needs. His journey from anxiety to assurance is a touching chapter in the ongoing mission of The Asher House to provide a sanctuary for animals in need.
