It’s often said that dogs are better off in shelters than left to fend for themselves on the unforgiving streets. This is usually true, but extended stays in shelters can have a negative impact on these lovable canines, leading them to become despondent, sad, and even depressed.
This was the case for Maggie, a striking Pit Bull who spent three long years in a shelter, waiting for the perfect family to find her.
A Fateful Encounter
Jen, a kind-hearted individual, walked into the shelter one day determined to adopt the dog that needed her the most. That’s when she met Maggie.
Maggie had been found after a devastating hurricane swept through Texas, and she had been living in the shelter ever since. Part of the reason she may have been overlooked by potential adopters is her breed. “Bully breeds, especially those that are dark-colored and older, are often the last to be adopted,” Jen shared in an interview with GeoBeats.

“Maggie seemed to understand that Gigi was really scared. She stayed calm around her, would relax and lay down at her feet, and just roll over wanting some love,” Jen recalled.
It didn’t take long for Gigi to see that all Maggie wanted was affection and plenty of belly rubs.
Now, whenever Maggie and Jen head to Gigi’s neighborhood, Maggie can hardly contain her excitement. Once inside, she never wants to leave.
Maggie also formed a strong bond with Jen’s partner, always staying close to him to soak up as many cuddles as she could. “She knows she has Gigi and my boyfriend completely smitten. So if I say no to something, she doesn’t hesitate to go to them to get what she wants,” Jen laughed.
The Joys of Companionship
Maggie enjoys the simple pleasures in life, like lying down. Whether it’s a comfy bed or a patch of soft grass, she loves to flop down for a nap whenever the mood strikes her.
She’s also developed her own unique way of communicating with Jen. “Just like hippopotamuses, Maggie uses grunts and snorts. She has six distinct sounds she makes, each telling me something different,” Jen explained.
The bond between Maggie and Jen is undeniable. Their wonderful relationship brings joy to everyone around them. “She is my universe. I can’t imagine going anywhere without her. Every morning, I wake up excited to start the day with my angel,” Jen shared.
