This poor female dog spent her entire life on the streets, enduring immense pain and suffering just to stay alive. Each day was a battle for survival, with no one to care for her or show her kindness.
She was at the brink of giving up when fate intervened in the form of two kind-hearted humans. This couple, who had rescued many dogs before, were particularly moved by the deep sadness they saw in this dog’s eyes.
She had never known what it felt like to be loved, cared for, or even gently petted. Her future seemed bleak, but hope was on the horizon.
Mija’s Rescue Story
Brady Oliveira and Alex Blumberg first heard about this poor dog from a friend who had seen her wandering the streets in a terrible state. Determined to help, they went out to find her. When they finally saw her, their hearts sank. The dog was extremely malnourished, emaciated, hairless, and looked as if she was on the verge of death.

“All you could see was skin and bones. She looked like a Gollum or a baby dinosaur-elephant,” Alex and Brady told The Dodo. The dog was frightened of everything and everyone around her. However, after a few minutes, she allowed Brady to pick her up, showing a look of complete resignation in her eyes.
“She definitely lived like that for years, but it looked like she only had a couple more days left,” Brady said, his voice filled with sorrow.
A Grim Diagnosis
The vet had no good news for the rescuers. The dog was extremely malnourished and dehydrated, her blood work was terrible, she had a severe case of sarcoptic mange, and her teeth were completely rotten. This poor dog needed extensive veterinary care, medication, and constant attention.
Despite the grim prognosis, Brady and Alex were determined to save her. They picked her up from the vet later that night and vowed to do everything in their power to keep her alive. The vet had started calling her “Mija,” which means “my girl” in Spanish. Alex found it fitting, especially since Brady often called her “my girl.” So, Mija became her name.
The Best Rescue Transformation
As soon as Brady and Alex brought Mija home, they fell in love with her. Their plan was to foster her until she was healthy enough to be adopted. However, given Mija’s dire condition, they knew it would be a long and challenging journey.
For the first few days, Mija was extremely tired and slept a lot, but she finally felt safe. “She had no idea how to cuddle or do anything that a dog should do,” Alex said. Despite her exhaustion, they took her on short walks to the beach. Mija was so weak and tired that she would stop after just a few steps.
A Spark of Life
Ten days later, Mija showed a spark of life. She mustered the energy to do a little run on the beach. “People thought we were insane. I’d be bawling my eyes out the second she took her first little run,” Alex said, recalling the emotional moment. Seeing her run for the first time was incredibly moving for her rescuers.
After fostering Mija for two months and dedicating all their energy, effort, and love to her recovery, she was finally healthy enough to be adopted. Her fur had grown back, and she looked like a completely different dog.
A New Beginning
The transformation was nothing short of miraculous. Mija had gone from a frightened, emaciated street dog to a healthy, happy pet ready for a loving home. “It was one of the most amazing experiences of our lives, watching her turn into a dog. Probably one of the hardest goodbyes with a dog that we’ve rescued,” Brady said.
They found a wonderful new home for Mija, fulfilling their promise to give her a good life. “Mija was ADOPTED and is very loved by her new Mama!” Brady shared in a heartfelt video.
A Hopeful Future
Mija’s story is a testament to the power of love, compassion, and determination. From a life of pain and suffering on the streets, she now enjoys the warmth and care of a loving family.
I truly hope that Mija’s days are filled only with love and happiness from now on because she deserves it. Her journey from despair to joy is an inspiring reminder that every dog, no matter how dire their circumstances, deserves a chance at a better life.
